WASHINGTON — Federal authorities have arrested seven people in connection with an investigation into damage at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C., officials said.
The arrests are part of a probe into alleged tampering and vandalism at the National Mall landmark following a multimillion-dollar renovation. An Interior Department spokesperson confirmed at least seven arrests and seven citations as of Thursday, according to reports.
U.S. Park Police have filed multiple police reports related to the incidents. Details of the specific charges and the circumstances of each arrest were not immediately available. Among those arrested was former U.S. Olympic canoeist David “Davey” Hearn, who has said he was detained after touching loose material in the pool but denied causing damage.
The investigation follows reports of issues with the pool’s new lining, including peeling material, a reported gash and the appearance of algae in the water. President Donald Trump has publicly attributed the problems to deliberate vandalism, stating that offenders could face significant penalties.
In one verified incident, Hearn was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of destruction of government property after interacting with a detached section of the liner. He told reporters he examined the material briefly before a park worker instructed him to stop and did not damage it.
Repairs to the pool are underway, with crews addressing the lining and water quality issues ahead of major national events, including observances related to the U.S. 250th anniversary. Fencing remains in place around the site.
The U.S. Park Police continue to investigate, and federal prosecutors have indicated that additional charges remain possible. Officials have released surveillance footage seeking to identify at least one other individual in connection with the probe.
“Details remain unclear” on the full extent of any deliberate damage versus issues stemming from the recent renovation work, officials have not released comprehensive findings. The National Park Service has not commented on potential long-term impacts to the historic site.
