MIAMI — Wildfires burning near Florida’s Everglades prompted evacuations in some areas and forced the closure of major highways this week as firefighters worked to contain multiple blazes amid dry conditions, according to state and local officials.

The largest fire, known as the Quarry 2 Fire, expanded rapidly in western Miami-Dade County after igniting earlier in the week, while additional fires, including the Well Fire and a smaller blaze identified as the Coptic Fire, were also burning nearby, officials said. The Florida Forest Service and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue have been leading suppression efforts with support from other agencies.

Authorities said smoke from the fires reduced visibility across parts of South Florida, leading transportation officials to close sections of key roadways. The Florida Department of Transportation said portions of Krome Avenue were shut down because of hazardous driving conditions, while local police reported closures affecting southbound U.S. Highway 27 in Broward County. Traffic was rerouted as conditions changed.

“Motorists should plan ahead or determine alternate travel options, as well as check fuel levels, drive alert, and be aware of changing speed limits and travel conditions,” the Florida Department of Transportation said in a statement.

Officials said the fires generated thick smoke that drifted into nearby communities, prompting health advisories for residents, particularly those with respiratory conditions. Local emergency agencies urged people to limit outdoor exposure when smoke levels were elevated.

The latest fires follow a series of significant wildfires that have affected South Florida and the Everglades region during 2026. Earlier in the year, fires in and around Everglades National Park burned thousands of acres, leading to temporary closures of park areas and transportation routes. Fire managers have cited dry vegetation, shifting winds and ongoing drought conditions as factors contributing to fire activity across the region.

Officials have not reported widespread structural damage from the current fires, and details regarding the number of people affected by evacuation orders remain unclear. Firefighters continued aerial and ground operations throughout the week as containment efforts progressed, authorities said.

As of Saturday, emergency crews remained on scene monitoring fire behavior and maintaining containment lines. Road closures and public safety measures were subject to change depending on smoke conditions, weather and fire activity, according to state and local officials.
