RIVERHEAD, NEW YORK — Convicted Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann faced relatives of his victims during a sentencing hearing on Wednesday, where family members addressed the court before a judge imposed a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole, according to court proceedings and media reports.

Heuermann, 62, appeared in Suffolk County Court in Riverhead after pleading guilty in April to the murders of seven women and admitting responsibility for an eighth killing as part of a plea agreement, prosecutors said. The sentencing hearing brought together relatives of the victims, many of whom spoke directly to Heuermann about the impact of the killings on their families.

Family members delivered victim impact statements before New York State Supreme Court Justice Timothy Mazzei imposed the sentence required under the plea agreement, according to court reports. Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney had said ahead of the hearing that relatives would have an opportunity to address the court and describe the lasting effects of the crimes on their lives.

“This is the opportunity for the victims to speak in court,” Tierney said before the hearing. “Up to this point it’s been about the defendant and safeguarding his rights and his presumption of innocence, and necessarily so, but that’s over with now.”

According to prosecutors, Heuermann admitted killing Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Amber Lynn Costello, Jessica Taylor, Valerie Mack and Sandra Costilla. He also admitted killing Karen Vergata, though he was not formally charged in her death. Prosecutors said the victims were killed between the early 1990s and 2010.

The case stems from a long-running investigation into human remains discovered near Gilgo Beach on Long Island. Authorities said advances in investigative techniques, including DNA analysis, cellphone records and vehicle evidence, helped identify Heuermann as a suspect, leading to his arrest in 2023.

During Wednesday’s proceedings, relatives described years of loss and uncertainty following the disappearances and deaths of their loved ones, according to courtroom accounts. Heuermann offered a brief apology before sentencing, reports said.

The sentencing concludes the criminal case against Heuermann after his guilty plea earlier this year. He is expected to spend the remainder of his life in state prison, according to the terms of the plea agreement and the sentence imposed by the court.
