TWIN FALLS, Idaho — A gunman killed three people and wounded seven others at a recently opened In-N-Out Burger restaurant in Twin Falls, Idaho, before dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said, as investigators continued working on Monday to determine a motive for the attack.
Twin Falls Police Chief Matthew Hicks said the suspect, identified as 24-year-old Chad Williams, acted alone in the shooting, which unfolded on Saturday afternoon at the busy restaurant. Authorities said officers responded after reports of gunfire and found multiple victims inside and outside the restaurant.
Police said three victims died in the attack, including an In-N-Out employee. Seven other people were injured, with two remaining in critical condition as of Monday, while several others had been treated or released from hospitals. Victims' identities had not all been released pending notification of relatives.
Investigators said an off-duty Idaho State Police trooper and an armed civilian returned fire during the incident. Hicks said their actions likely prevented additional casualties by disrupting the gunman's assault. Authorities said the suspect ultimately died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Police have not announced a motive and said detectives were continuing to examine evidence, interview witnesses and review video from the scene. The FBI is assisting local authorities with evidence collection and other aspects of the investigation. Officials also urged anyone with photographs, videos or other information to contact investigators.
In-N-Out President Lynsi Snyder confirmed that one of the company's employees was among those killed and said the restaurant chain was cooperating fully with law enforcement. In a public statement, Snyder expressed condolences to the victims' families, employees and customers affected by the shooting.
The shooting occurred just days after the restaurant's opening and sent customers and employees fleeing as gunfire erupted in and around the drive-thru area, according to witness accounts cited by authorities. Emergency responders established a large perimeter around the shopping area while investigators processed the scene.
Authorities said the investigation remains active. Police reiterated that, based on the evidence gathered so far, they believe Williams acted alone and said they would release additional information as it becomes available.
