WASHINGTON — Former U.S. President Joe Biden's prostate cancer has spread beyond his bones and is causing significant pain, his son Hunter Biden said in a BBC interview, offering a new account of the 83-year-old former president's health.
“The cancer has spread, metastasized into his bones and further,” Hunter Biden said in the interview broadcast on Friday. He described the illness as “very painful” and “very debilitating in many respects.”
The comments provide the latest public update on Biden's condition, although his son did not give details of the cancer's further spread or provide a new medical assessment from his father's doctors.
Biden's personal office announced in May 2025 that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that had metastasized to his bones. The cancer was described at the time as hormone-sensitive, a characteristic that can allow doctors to manage the disease with treatments aimed at blocking or reducing hormones that fuel tumor growth.
Biden subsequently underwent radiation and hormone therapy. In October 2025, he completed a course of radiation treatment, according to reports at the time.
The former president has remained intermittently active in public life since leaving office in January 2025. A Washington Post report published in July said Biden was continuing cancer treatment and that people close to him believed the treatment was working, while also describing the physical toll of the disease and its treatment.
Hunter Biden said watching his father cope with the illness had been difficult for the family. He also said he wished his father would speak more openly about the pain he is experiencing.
Jill Biden, the former president's wife, has previously spoken publicly about his condition and said he would likely live with cancer for the rest of his life.
There was no immediate public announcement from Joe Biden's office providing additional medical details following Hunter Biden's interview.
