TREMP, Spain — A 63-year-old British man died in a paragliding accident in northeastern Spain after becoming tangled in power lines, authorities said.
The incident occurred near the village of Palau de Noguera in Catalonia’s Lleida province, close to the popular paragliding area of Àger in the foothills of the Pyrenees, on Wednesday afternoon.
Emergency services were alerted at around 1:20 p.m. local time. Three teams of firefighters from stations in Tremp and Sort responded and launched a search for the paraglider. They located the man seriously injured, provided initial medical aid and handed him over to paramedics from the Emergency Medical Service upon their arrival.
"Unfortunately, the man, aged 63 and of British nationality, lost his life," a spokesperson for the regional government said.
Officers from Catalonia’s Mossos d’Esquadra police force also attended the scene with multiple patrols. Police have opened an investigation into the circumstances of the accident, though early indications point to a tragic mishap, sources said.
The man’s identity has not been publicly released. It was not immediately clear whether he was a resident of Spain or visiting the area.
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said in a statement: "We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Spain."
The area around Palau de Noguera and Àger is known for its suitability for paragliding and hang gliding, attracting enthusiasts to the mountainous terrain. Details about the man’s experience level or the specific conditions at the time of the flight remain unclear.
No further information on next of kin or repatriation arrangements has been released. Authorities continue to investigate.
