WASHINGTON — A UFC event held on the South Lawn of the White House on Sunday highlighted the long-standing relationship between President Donald Trump and UFC President Dana White, bringing mixed martial arts to the center of a nationally televised celebration tied to the upcoming 250th anniversary of U.S. independence, organizers and White House officials said.
The event, known as “UFC Freedom 250,” featured a series of professional bouts in a temporary arena erected on White House grounds. According to organizers, the card was staged as part of broader America 250 commemorations and coincided with Trump’s 80th birthday and Flag Day. UFC officials said the event was broadcast nationally and attended by invited guests, military personnel and other spectators.
The White House and UFC worked for months on logistics for the event, which transformed part of the South Lawn into an outdoor combat sports venue. UFC officials said the project included a large lighting structure known as “The Claw” and temporary seating for several thousand attendees.
Trump and White have maintained ties dating back more than two decades. White has frequently credited Trump with supporting UFC events during the promotion’s early years when it was seeking mainstream acceptance. The relationship has continued through Trump’s political career, with White appearing at campaign events and political conventions.
Speaking before the event, White described the project as “an honor” and said the organization viewed the occasion as a historic moment for the sport. “It’s an honor to build a fight arena on the White House lawn,” White said in interviews ahead of the event.
The event also drew criticism from some political opponents and commentators who questioned the appropriateness of hosting a professional combat sports card at the presidential residence. A Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted before the event found limited public support for the idea, according to Reuters reporting. Legal challenges seeking to halt the event were unsuccessful.
Despite the criticism, the event proceeded as scheduled on Sunday, with fighters from several countries participating. Organizers said the program was intended to showcase both the UFC brand and the broader America 250 celebrations.
As of Sunday evening, the fights were underway at the White House venue, and officials had not announced any changes to the planned schedule. Weather conditions and attendance arrangements continued to be monitored by organizers, UFC officials said.
