SPIELBERG, Austria — Mercedes driver George Russell secured pole position for the Austrian Grand Prix after a dramatic Formula One qualifying session at the Red Bull Ring on Saturday, with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton completing the top three after late-session drama involving Max Verstappen.
The qualifying result sets the grid for Sunday's race and continues Mercedes' strong one-lap form during the 2026 season. Russell's fastest lap of 1 minute 6.113 seconds came moments after Verstappen crashed at Turn 9 on his final flying lap, prompting yellow flags and a post-session review of Russell's lap. FIA stewards subsequently determined that no further action was required, confirming the Mercedes driver on pole.
Leclerc qualified second for Ferrari, 0.236 seconds behind Russell, while teammate Hamilton took third after another competitive performance for the Italian team. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli, driving the second Mercedes, qualified fourth after abandoning his final attempt because of the yellow-flag conditions created by Verstappen's accident. Verstappen, despite the crash, retained fifth on the grid based on an earlier lap, with McLaren teammates Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri qualifying sixth and seventh respectively.
Russell said after qualifying that he believed he had complied with the yellow-flag requirements during his decisive lap. "I feel incredible. It was such an amazing lap. I saw the yellow, I had a big lift into the corner. I was five tenths up and I came out the last corner two and a half tenths up, so it was a single yellow as well, not a double, so it should be OK," Russell said during the FIA post-qualifying press conference. "It was a tough day, but it was so special to get that lap and everything felt so sweet, so really proud of the job we all did."
The FIA published the final qualifying classification and provisional starting grid later on Saturday after reviewing incidents from the session, including the yellow-flag procedures in the closing stages. Official documents confirmed Russell's pole position and the final order for the front rows of the grid.
The remainder of the top 10 featured Isack Hadjar in eighth for Red Bull's second team, Liam Lawson in ninth and Arvid Lindblad in 10th. Several established drivers exited earlier than expected, including Carlos Sainz, Alexander Albon, Sergio Pérez, Valtteri Bottas, Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll.
The Austrian Grand Prix is scheduled to take place on Sunday at the Red Bull Ring, with Russell set to start from pole position after the FIA confirmed the final qualifying results and starting grid.
