NEW YORK — Long lines and extended wait times have become common at several bakeries and specialty food stores as demand surges for viral “dot cakes,” a sprinkle-covered dessert that has gained widespread attention on social media in recent weeks.
The cakes, sold in individual cups and topped with a thick layer of colorful nonpareil sprinkles, have attracted customers across New York and beyond after videos featuring the dessert accumulated millions of views on TikTok and other platforms. The trend originated with The Dotcakes, a family-run bakery on Long Island founded by Alex and Sondra Posner.
Demand increased sharply after influencers posted videos highlighting the cakes’ appearance and texture. Customers have lined up outside locations carrying the product, including Manhattan’s Butterfield Market, where supplies have regularly sold out shortly after restocking, according to media reports.
“The line starts as early as 6 a.m. and goes around the block,” The New York Times reported, according to a summary published by The New Daily. The publication said some customers waited for hours to purchase the cakes before supplies ran out.
The dessert consists of layers of cake and frosting topped with rainbow-colored sprinkles that create a crunchy surface. Videos showing customers tapping or scraping the sprinkle coating before taking a bite have become a defining feature of the trend online.
Alex Posner, co-founder of The Dotcakes, told Good Morning America earlier this month that the popularity of the product had exceeded expectations. “I cannot go on my phone without seeing a video of a dot cake,” she said.
As demand has grown, bakeries in New York and other regions have introduced their own versions of the dessert. Shops in Brooklyn, Albany and other cities have reported strong sales, while national retailers and food brands have launched similar products inspired by the trend.
Not all reactions have been positive. Some food critics and consumers have questioned whether the cakes justify the long waits, arguing that the popularity reflects social media hype more than culinary innovation. Others have praised the cakes’ nostalgic flavor and visual appeal.
Despite differing opinions, the trend continues to drive customer traffic. Bakery owners say they are increasing production and extending operating hours where possible to meet demand. According to recent interviews, The Dotcakes has expanded output from hundreds of units per week to several thousand as interest in the dessert continues to spread.
As of June 2026, dot cakes remain among the most widely discussed food trends on social media, with retailers reporting ongoing sellouts and customers continuing to queue for the opportunity to purchase the viral dessert.
