RIVERHEAD, N.Y. — A New York judge sentenced convicted Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann to life in prison without the possibility of parole on Wednesday after the former Long Island architect admitted to murdering eight women in a series of killings that spanned nearly two decades, according to court records and prosecutors.

Heuermann, 62, received multiple consecutive life sentences in Suffolk County Court after pleading guilty in April to seven murder charges and admitting responsibility for an eighth killing as part of a plea agreement. The sentence ensures he will spend the remainder of his life in prison under New York law.

The sentencing hearing took place in Riverhead, where relatives of the victims addressed the court and described the long-lasting impact of the crimes. According to media reports and court proceedings, family members spoke about years of grief and the challenges they faced following the disappearances and deaths of their loved ones.

Before sentencing, Heuermann briefly addressed the court. “There are no words. I am responsible,” he said, according to courtroom reports. He added that any words he could offer “have no meaning.”

Judge Timothy Mazzei imposed the sentence after hearing statements from victims’ relatives and reviewing the terms of the plea agreement. Court proceedings indicated that the sentence included consecutive life terms for several of the murders, along with additional prison terms tied to other convictions.

The case centered on a string of killings linked to Gilgo Beach on Long Island. Several victims' remains were discovered beginning in 2010 along Ocean Parkway, leading to one of the most closely watched homicide investigations in New York state. Authorities later connected Heuermann to the crimes through a combination of cellphone records, witness information, vehicle evidence and DNA analysis, prosecutors said.

Heuermann was arrested in July 2023 after a renewed multi-agency investigation. Prosecutors said he killed women between 1993 and 2010, many of whom worked as sex workers. The victims included Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Amber Costello, Jessica Taylor, Valerie Mack, Sandra Costilla and Karen Vergata.

As of Wednesday, the criminal case against Heuermann had effectively concluded with the sentencing. Law enforcement officials have not publicly announced any new charges, and authorities said no further court proceedings were immediately scheduled.
