NEW YORK — Thousands of fans filled Lower Manhattan on Thursday as the New York Knicks celebrated their NBA championship with a ticker-tape parade through the city’s historic Canyon of Heroes, marking the franchise’s first title in 53 years, city officials and team representatives said.

The parade traveled along Broadway from Battery Park to City Hall, where players, coaches and team executives were honored during a ceremony hosted by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. The city presented members of the team with Keys to the City following the championship victory over the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals.

Fans began gathering hours before the event, with some arriving overnight to secure viewing spots along the route. The New York Police Department said designated viewing areas reached capacity before the parade began, reflecting the scale of interest in the celebration.

The Knicks secured the championship on June 13 by defeating the Spurs in Game 5 of the NBA Finals, ending a title drought that dated to 1973. City officials described Thursday’s event as the first ticker-tape parade in the franchise’s history.

Orange and blue confetti fell across the Financial District as players rode through crowds of supporters. Fans waved team flags, wore Knicks jerseys and chanted in support of players including Finals MVP Jalen Brunson and All-Star center Karl-Anthony Towns. Former Knicks players and prominent supporters of the team also joined the festivities.

“For more than 50 years, New Yorkers have waited for this moment,” Mayor Mamdani said in a statement announcing the celebration earlier this week. “Now it’s time for our city to celebrate together.”

City officials deployed a large security presence along the route and implemented street closures and transit adjustments to accommodate the crowds. Authorities reported no major incidents during the parade itself, although access to several viewing areas was restricted after they filled to capacity.

The championship has generated widespread celebrations across New York City since the Knicks clinched the title. Fans gathered outside Madison Square Garden immediately after the victory, and demand for championship merchandise surged in the days leading up to the parade, according to local media reports.
