JAKARTA — A magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck off the west coast of North Sumatra, Indonesia, on Sunday morning, authorities said, with early assessments indicating no tsunami threat and no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The earthquake occurred at about 10:40 a.m. local time, with its epicenter located in the Indian Ocean roughly 161 kilometers southwest of the island of Simeulue, according to preliminary seismic data reported by regional monitoring agencies. The quake had a relatively shallow depth of about 10 kilometers, which can sometimes increase the likelihood of ground shaking being felt in nearby areas.

Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, known as BMKG, said the tremor originated offshore and was categorized as a tectonic earthquake. Officials said there was no indication that the event had the potential to generate a tsunami.

“The earthquake does not have tsunami potential,” a monitoring update from regional meteorological authorities said shortly after the event.

Authorities in nearby countries also issued brief assessments. Malaysia’s Meteorological Department said the earthquake posed no tsunami threat to Malaysia and that no warning was issued following its evaluation of the seismic data.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or structural damage from Indonesian authorities, and details about whether the quake was widely felt in coastal communities of Aceh or North Sumatra remained unclear in the initial hours after the event.

The waters off northern Sumatra lie along a highly active tectonic boundary where the Indo-Australian Plate converges with the Eurasian Plate. The region is part of the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a zone known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity.

Indonesia regularly experiences seismic events of varying magnitude due to its location across several major fault lines and subduction zones. Earthquakes in offshore areas near Sumatra often prompt rapid tsunami assessments because of the region’s history of destructive seismic disasters.

Authorities said monitoring would continue for potential aftershocks, which are common following moderate earthquakes. Seismological agencies noted that early measurements can be revised as additional data becomes available.

As of Sunday afternoon, disaster management officials had not issued evacuation orders or emergency warnings related to the earthquake. Monitoring agencies said they would provide further updates if new information emerges.
