CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. — A Marine recruit has died after suffering a medical emergency during a routine physical fitness evaluation at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, the U.S. Marine Corps said, prompting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to a statement released by Marine Corps officials, the recruit experienced the medical emergency on Saturday while participating in a scheduled physical fitness assessment at the Southern California installation. The recruit was transported for medical treatment but died on Wednesday despite medical care, the statement said.
The Marine Corps has not publicly identified the recruit, pending notification of next of kin. Officials also did not disclose the recruit's age, hometown or the specific medical condition involved.
The service said the incident remains under investigation. It did not indicate whether environmental conditions, pre-existing medical issues or any aspect of the training contributed to the medical emergency. No additional details were immediately available.
Marine Corps officials said they are providing support to the recruit's family and to others affected by the death.
