MEMPHIS, Tennessee — Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke has died at the age of 29, the team, his agency and the NBA announced on Tuesday.
Clarke was found unresponsive at a home in the Los Angeles area on Monday and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to local authorities. No official cause of death has been released.
The Grizzlies said in a statement that they were “heartbroken by the tragic loss of Brandon Clarke.” “Brandon was an outstanding teammate and an even better person whose impact on the organization and the greater Memphis community will not be forgotten,” the team added.
Clarke, a 6-foot-8 forward known for his athleticism and defensive versatility, was selected 21st overall by the Grizzlies in the 2019 NBA Draft out of Gonzaga University. He spent all seven seasons of his NBA career with Memphis, appearing in 309 regular-season games. He earned All-Rookie First Team honors in his debut season.
In the most recent season, Clarke’s playing time was limited due to injuries, including a knee issue. He had been preparing for the upcoming campaign after recovering from the injury.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver issued a statement expressing condolences. “We are devastated to learn of the passing of Brandon Clarke. As one of the longest-tenured members of the Grizzlies, Brandon was a beloved teammate and leader who played the game with enormous passion and grit,” Silver said.
Clarke’s agency, Priority Sports, also confirmed the news and offered condolences to his family. Tributes from teammates, opponents and basketball figures poured in across social media and through official channels following the announcement.
Details surrounding the circumstances of his death remain unclear. Authorities in Los Angeles County are investigating, with some preliminary reports indicating the presence of drug paraphernalia at the scene and the matter being examined as a possible overdose. Toxicology results and an official determination are pending.
The Grizzlies said the organization is focused on supporting Clarke’s family, teammates and staff during this time. No further schedule for memorial events has been announced.
