DETROIT — Michigan’s Democratic primary has exposed a sharper divide between the party’s progressive and moderate wings, with Abdul El-Sayed’s narrow victory in the U.S. Senate contest providing the clearest evidence yet of the left’s growing influence in a key Midwestern battleground.
El-Sayed, a former Michigan health official, defeated Democratic Representative Haley Stevens in the Aug. 4 primary by less than a percentage point, according to election results and projections. The closely fought contest pitted El-Sayed’s progressive platform against Stevens, who had backing from prominent establishment Democrats, including Governor Gretchen Whitmer.
The result was significant because Michigan’s open Senate seat is expected to be closely contested in November. Republican nominee Mike Rogers, a former U.S. representative, will face El-Sayed in the general election for the seat being vacated by Democratic Senator Gary Peters, who is not seeking reelection.
El-Sayed campaigned on expanding government-backed healthcare, including Medicare for All, and criticized U.S. policy toward Israel. Stevens emphasized her congressional record and experience in Democratic administrations. The primary became a test of whether a progressive candidate could win statewide in a competitive Midwestern state against a better-established opponent with substantial institutional support.
The Senate contest was not the only sign of change within Michigan Democrats. Jocelyn Benson, the state’s secretary of state, won the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, putting her on the November ballot in a race to succeed term-limited Whitmer.
Several Democratic candidates with ties to the party’s progressive and Arab American constituencies also won primary contests in parts of Metro Detroit. The results included victories by state legislative candidates such as Abbas Alawieh and Alabas Farhat, while turnout in heavily Arab American areas such as Dearborn was unusually strong.
Democratic leaders moved quickly after the Senate result to emphasize unity. Stevens endorsed El-Sayed after conceding, while other prominent Michigan Democrats also pledged support for the nominee. El-Sayed and Stevens subsequently appeared together as Democrats sought to put the divisive primary behind them ahead of the general election.
Michigan’s Secretary of State said the Aug. 4 election was the state’s scheduled primary, with the Nov. 3 general election next on the calendar. The Senate race will now test whether Democrats can translate the primary coalition behind El-Sayed into a statewide majority while Republicans seek to capitalize on divisions exposed during the contest.
