NEW DELHI—Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted a breakfast meeting with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) parliamentarians on Thursday, using the interaction to review parliamentary strategy, discuss the government's legislative agenda and urge lawmakers to strengthen outreach to the public during the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament, according to party leaders.
The meeting, held at the prime minister's official residence, was attended by BJP Members of Parliament from both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, along with senior party leaders. Such interactions have been held periodically to allow the prime minister to exchange views directly with legislators on parliamentary business and constituency-related issues.
Party leaders said discussions focused on ensuring coordinated participation in Parliament, communicating the government's policy initiatives more effectively and maintaining discipline during debates. Lawmakers also shared feedback from their constituencies and raised issues concerning local development and implementation of central government programmes, according to people familiar with the meeting.
The breakfast meeting came amid a politically charged Monsoon Session, during which the government has sought to advance its legislative agenda while facing persistent opposition protests over several issues. Parliament has witnessed repeated disruptions in recent weeks, affecting the functioning of both Houses on multiple occasions.
The BJP has regularly used parliamentary party meetings and smaller interactions with groups of MPs to discuss floor coordination, legislative priorities and public communication. Previous meetings chaired by Modi have emphasized preparedness for parliamentary debates, constituency engagement and highlighting the government's welfare and development initiatives.
Earlier this week, Modi also chaired the National Democratic Alliance's regular parliamentary meeting, where government leaders highlighted the administration's economic performance and other policy achievements while discussing parliamentary strategy with coalition partners. That meeting took place as the Monsoon Session continued amid opposition protests and legislative business.
No formal policy announcements were made following Thursday's breakfast interaction. BJP leaders said the discussions were intended to strengthen coordination among party lawmakers and prepare them for the remaining sittings of the Monsoon Session, which is scheduled to continue with government business and debates on pending legislation.
