HOUSTON — Portugal and the Democratic Republic of Congo opened their FIFA World Cup Group K campaigns with a 1-1 draw on Wednesday, as the African side secured a historic result in its first World Cup appearance in more than five decades.
Portugal took an early lead when João Neves scored in the sixth minute after an assist from Pedro Neto, according to match reports. The Portuguese side controlled much of the possession during the opening stages but was unable to extend its advantage despite creating opportunities.
DR Congo, competing in its first World Cup since 1974, responded just before halftime when Yoane Wissa found the net to level the match. The goal was reported as the country's first ever at a FIFA World Cup and helped secure its first point in the competition.
The match marked a milestone for Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who became one of the few players to appear in six World Cup tournaments. At 41, Ronaldo started the Group K opener but was unable to add to Portugal's tally as DR Congo's defense limited clear scoring chances in the second half.
Portugal entered the tournament as one of the higher-ranked teams in Group K, which also includes Uzbekistan and Colombia. The European side qualified strongly for the tournament and is seeking its first World Cup title. DR Congo returned to the global competition after a 52-year absence, having secured qualification through the World Cup playoff pathway.
Following the match, Portugal coach Roberto Martinez said his team struggled to maintain urgency after taking the lead.
"We lacked a little bit of urgency," Martinez said, according to Reuters, adding that pressure may have affected his players during the opening fixture.
DR Congo coach Sébastien Desabre's side adopted a disciplined defensive approach and capitalized on limited opportunities. Reports said the Congolese team remained organized throughout the second half as Portugal pushed for a winner.
The draw leaves both teams with one point after their opening Group K match. Portugal is scheduled to face Uzbekistan next, while DR Congo will take on Colombia as the group stage continues. The standings remain tightly contested after the first round of matches.
