NEW YORK — New York City officials are finalizing preparations for a major ticker-tape parade honoring the New York Knicks after the team secured its first NBA championship since 1973, with the celebration scheduled to take place in Lower Manhattan on Thursday, according to the mayor’s office.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that the city would host a ticker-tape parade and City Hall ceremony on June 18 following the Knicks’ championship-clinching victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday. City officials said planning efforts were underway to manage crowds, transportation, security and event logistics ahead of what is expected to be one of the city's largest public celebrations in recent years.

The parade is scheduled to begin at Battery Park and proceed north along Broadway through the Canyon of Heroes before concluding at City Hall, where players, coaches and team officials are expected to participate in a ceremony and receive Keys to the City, according to the mayor’s office. Municipal buildings across the city are also set to be illuminated in blue and orange to mark the occasion.

“For more than 50 years, New Yorkers have waited for this moment,” Mamdani said in a statement announcing the event. City officials said additional details regarding public viewing areas, street closures and media access would be released ahead of the celebration.

The event will be the first ticker-tape parade held in honor of the Knicks, according to city officials. While the franchise won previous NBA championships in 1970 and 1973, the team did not receive a ticker-tape parade following those victories. Officials said the upcoming event would add the Knicks to the long list of athletes, public figures and organizations honored along the historic Broadway route.

Preparations come after widespread celebrations erupted across New York following the championship victory. City agencies have been coordinating with law enforcement, transportation authorities and event organizers to accommodate spectators expected to gather along the parade route. Officials have not released attendance projections. Details regarding security measures remain limited.

The Knicks defeated the Spurs in five games to capture the NBA title, ending a championship drought that had lasted more than five decades. The victory prompted celebrations throughout the city and renewed interest in New York’s tradition of ticker-tape parades.

As of Monday, city agencies continued preparations for Thursday’s event. Officials said final logistical information, including traffic advisories and public access guidance, would be released before the parade begins.
