TIRANA — Protests continued across Albania on Monday against a proposed luxury tourism development on the country's Adriatic coast, with demonstrators opposing plans for a resort project linked to investors associated with U.S. businessman Jared Kushner and raising concerns about environmental protection, transparency and land use.

The demonstrations, which began earlier this month, have drawn thousands of people to the capital, Tirana, and other locations, according to media reports and organizers. Protesters have objected to plans for tourism developments on Sazan Island and in coastal areas near the protected Vjosa-Narta landscape and Zvërnec peninsula, regions known for sensitive ecosystems and wildlife habitats.

Environmental groups say the projects could affect wetlands, migratory bird routes and habitats used by flamingos, sea turtles and other species. Demonstrators have also called for greater public consultation and disclosure regarding the development plans. Many protesters carried banners reading “Albania is not for sale” during rallies in Tirana earlier this month.

“We want a new Albania,” protesters chanted during recent demonstrations, according to media reports.

Prime Minister Edi Rama has defended the project, describing it as an opportunity to attract investment and expand Albania's tourism sector. The government has said the development could help position the country as a higher-end tourist destination and contribute to economic growth.

Developers and supporters of the project have said environmental reviews are being conducted and have rejected allegations that the development would proceed without appropriate safeguards. According to public statements cited by media outlets, officials have maintained that the project can be carried out while meeting environmental requirements.

The protests have expanded beyond environmental concerns, with some participants expressing broader dissatisfaction with governance and corruption. Demonstrations have remained largely focused on opposition to the proposed developments, although some rallies have included wider political demands.

Separate protests have also occurred in the northern coastal area of Rrjoll, where residents objected to another tourism development project and disputed ownership of land being used for construction. Local protesters said they would continue their campaign until their concerns were addressed.

As of Monday, construction-related activity associated with some of the projects was continuing, while protests remained ongoing. Albanian authorities have not announced any suspension of the developments, and discussions between officials, developers and opponents of the projects were continuing. Details on any potential changes to the plans remained unclear.
