DEHRADUN — Seven workers have died and one remains missing after water and debris entered an under-construction hydroelectric tunnel in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district, according to the latest official figures reported on Friday.
The incident occurred on Thursday evening at Mayapur in Pipalkoti, where a landslide caused a cavity to form at a tunnel being built by state-run Tehri Hydro Development Corporation (THDC), allowing water and debris to rush inside, officials said.
Fourteen workers were rescued and taken to a hospital in Gopeshwar for treatment, according to the official casualty update. Rescue teams continued searching for the remaining missing worker.
The tunnel is part of the Vishnugad-Pipalkoti hydroelectric project in Chamoli district. Authorities have deployed rescue personnel to the site as operations continue.
Earlier reports had put the death toll at six, but the latest official list raised the confirmed number to seven, with one worker still unaccounted for.
Officials had not immediately provided further details on the identities of the deceased or the precise cause of the tunnel failure. The situation remained under assessment as rescue operations continued.
