MONTGOMERY — Tennessee, Alabama and Oklahoma are scheduled to carry out executions on Thursday, Aug. 13, in what would be the first time since 2010 that three U.S. states put prisoners to death on the same day, according to the Death Penalty Information Center and state records.
The scheduled executions involve Anthony Darrell Hines in Tennessee, Jeremy Williams in Alabama and Carlos Cuesta-Rodriguez in Oklahoma. All three are scheduled to be executed by lethal injection, although Alabama's death warrant gives the state a 30-hour window beginning Aug. 13 rather than a single fixed time.
Tennessee's Department of Correction has set Hines' execution for 10 a.m. Central time on Thursday. Hines was convicted in the 1985 killing of motel employee Katherine Jenkins in Memphis. His execution date was set after the state resumed executions following a pause linked to problems with its lethal-injection procedures. State records show media witnesses have been selected for the execution.
In Alabama, Williams is scheduled to be executed between midnight Aug. 13 and 6 a.m. Aug. 14 under an order signed by Republican Governor Kay Ivey. Williams was convicted of capital murder in the 2021 kidnapping, rape and killing of 5-year-old Kamarie Holland in Phenix City. He waived further appeals, allowing the state to set an execution date.
Oklahoma plans to execute Cuesta-Rodriguez, 70, for the 2003 killing of Olimpia Fisher in Oklahoma City. The state's Pardon and Parole Board voted 3-1 against recommending clemency in July. Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond said Cuesta-Rodriguez's execution was set for Aug. 13.
Cuesta-Rodriguez's attorneys had sought clemency and argued that he had suffered a difficult childhood and serious mental-health and neurological problems, according to reporting on his clemency proceedings. Cuesta-Rodriguez himself told the board he did not want clemency and expressed regret for Fisher's death.
The simultaneous executions are unusual rather than unprecedented. The Death Penalty Information Center says three or more executions have occurred on the same day 13 times since executions resumed in the United States in 1977. The most recent was Jan. 7, 2010, when Louisiana, Ohio and Texas each carried out an execution.
The three executions remain scheduled for Aug. 13, subject to any last-minute court action, clemency decisions or other changes to the warrants.
