MUMBAI — Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran will step down in February 2027 after deciding not to seek reappointment, ending a decade at the helm of the holding company of India’s Tata Group.
Chandrasekaran communicated his decision to the Tata Sons board on Wednesday, saying he would complete his current term, which expires on Feb. 20, 2027, according to a source familiar with the matter and reporting by Reuters.
In a statement cited by Indian media, Chandrasekaran said the board had been unable to reach a resolution on extending his tenure after a proposal for a further five-year term failed to receive unanimous support. He said he had therefore decided not to offer himself for reappointment and asked the board to begin the succession process to ensure a smooth transition.
The decision follows months of uncertainty over Chandrasekaran’s future. Tata Sons had considered extending his chairmanship beyond his current term, but discussions on the issue remained unresolved. Business Standard reported in June that the board had held inconclusive discussions over a possible third term.
Chandrasekaran became chairman of Tata Sons in 2017 after previously serving as chief executive of Tata Consultancy Services. He joined the Tata Sons board in 2016. Tata Motors describes Tata Sons as the holding company of more than 100 Tata operating companies.
His departure will initiate a leadership transition at one of India’s largest business groups, which has interests spanning information technology, automobiles, steel, aviation, power and consumer businesses. The group has also been pursuing major investments in areas including electronics and semiconductor manufacturing under Chandrasekaran’s leadership.
The succession question has unfolded against broader governance discussions within the Tata Group. Tata Trusts, which holds a majority stake in Tata Sons, had previously supported a further term for Chandrasekaran, while later board discussions failed to produce agreement.
No successor has been officially announced. Chandrasekaran is expected to remain chairman until the end of his current term on Feb. 20, 2027, giving Tata Sons several months to determine the group’s next leadership arrangement.
