SAN FRANCISCO — Major technology companies are announcing initiatives to address calls for greater sharing of public benefits from their operations, including through public benefit corporation structures, data access pledges and community investment programs, as regulators and advocates press for broader societal returns.

Several leading artificial intelligence firms have adopted or are transitioning to public benefit corporation (PBC) status, a legal structure requiring consideration of stakeholders beyond shareholders. Anthropic and xAI have organized as PBCs, while OpenAI has moved its for-profit entity toward this model, with its nonprofit parent retaining significant control.

In July 2025, more than 60 health care and technology companies, including Amazon, Apple, Google, Microsoft and OpenAI, signed a pledge orchestrated by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to improve patient data sharing and develop tools for individuals to access their health information.

Microsoft outlined a five-point plan in January 2026 for community-first AI infrastructure, committing to address local needs around data centers and electricity demands without shifting costs to the public. The company emphasized paying its own way for power infrastructure tied to AI growth.

Advocates and some policymakers have proposed mechanisms such as equity shares or taxes on AI firms to ensure broader public ownership of benefits from the technology. Discussions around sovereign wealth funds or similar structures to distribute gains have gained attention.

Industry groups, including the Information Technology Industry Council, have called for public-private partnerships on issues like AI workforce training, cybersecurity information sharing and federal privacy standards.

Critics argue that more concrete measures are needed to counter wealth concentration and ensure equitable distribution of AI-driven gains. Philanthropic initiatives have also supported efforts to align AI development with public interest goals.

A Microsoft spokesperson said the company is focused on responsible AI development that delivers broad benefits. Details on the financial scale or long-term impact of these various corporate responses remain unclear at this stage.
