SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Wildfires burning across parts of the western United States prompted evacuation warnings and road closures this week as fire agencies responded to multiple blazes amid dry conditions and the start of the region’s summer fire season, officials said on Monday and Tuesday.

In Northern California, the Putah Fire near Lake Berryessa expanded rapidly after igniting on Monday, leading authorities to issue evacuation warnings for nearby communities and close a section of Highway 128, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) and local authorities. Fire officials said the blaze burned several hundred acres, while its cause remained under investigation.

Cal Fire said firefighters, aircraft and heavy equipment were deployed to contain the fire. Officials reported that challenging terrain and gusty winds complicated suppression efforts, although cooler temperatures and higher humidity later aided firefighting operations.

“Evacuation warnings are in place for affected areas, and residents should remain prepared to leave if conditions change,” local emergency officials said in public advisories issued during the response.

Elsewhere in the West, emergency management agencies continued monitoring several active wildfires that had triggered evacuation notices in recent days. In Washington state, a wildfire near Chelan Falls led authorities to issue evacuation advisories before firefighters increased containment and reduced some restrictions, according to Chelan County Emergency Management. Officials said fire crews remained on scene to prevent renewed spread.

In Southern California, authorities reported that a wildfire near the U.S.-Mexico border in the Dulzura area prompted evacuation warnings earlier this month. The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department later lifted some warnings after containment improved, while Cal Fire said no injuries or structural damage had been reported.

The fires come as federal and state agencies warn of elevated wildfire risks across portions of the West. Fire officials have cited dry vegetation, drought conditions in some regions and seasonal weather patterns as factors contributing to increased fire potential. The National Interagency Fire Center and regional agencies have forecast above-normal wildfire risk in parts of the western United States during the summer months.

Federal officials have also adjusted wildfire management strategies ahead of the season. The U.S. Department of the Interior recently emphasized a more aggressive suppression approach for new fires following several large incidents in the region.

As of Tuesday, firefighting operations were continuing across multiple states. Authorities said evacuation orders and warnings remained subject to change depending on fire behavior and weather conditions. No widespread casualties linked to the current fires had been reported by officials, and investigations into the causes of several blazes were ongoing.
