NEW YORK — The 2026 FIFA World Cup has drawn record crowds across host cities in the United States, Canada and Mexico, with tournament organizers reporting unprecedented attendance figures at stadiums and fan events during the opening weeks of the competition.

FIFA said more than 1.3 million spectators attended matches during the tournament’s first six days, with average attendance exceeding 65,000 per game. On June 16, a combined crowd of 281,223 spectators attended four matches, setting a new single-day attendance record for the men’s World Cup and surpassing the previous mark established during the 1994 tournament in the United States.

The tournament, jointly hosted by three countries for the first time, is being played in 16 cities across North America. FIFA has said the expanded 48-team format and increased stadium capacities have contributed to strong demand for tickets and fan experiences. Officials reported that several venues have operated near capacity during the group stage.

“16 June 2026 will go down in FIFA World Cup history,” FIFA President Gianni Infantino said in a statement released by the governing body. “I cannot thank our fans enough for bringing colour, atmosphere and emotions to this tournament.”

Beyond the stadiums, FIFA reported that official Fan Festival sites across host cities attracted more than two million visitors by June 18. According to tournament organizers, the largest crowds were recorded in Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey, while venues in the United States and Canada frequently reached capacity.

Local authorities and organizers in several host cities have also faced logistical challenges associated with the influx of visitors. In Kansas City, officials addressed transportation congestion and security concerns following large crowds attending matches and fan events. Organizers said additional measures were implemented to improve crowd management and visitor access.

The tournament is taking place in venues ranging from the approximately 43,000-seat stadium in Toronto to facilities capable of accommodating more than 80,000 spectators in the New York-New Jersey region and Mexico City. FIFA has said the competition remains on track to surpass the overall World Cup attendance record established in 1994.

Businesses in several host cities have reported increased demand for accommodations and tourism-related services. Hospitality providers in cities such as Dallas and other host locations have cited strong booking activity linked to the tournament.
