The arrest of a man accused of deliberately igniting one of the wildfires that devastated communities around Spokane, Washington, has highlighted a recurring challenge in understanding the western United States' wildfire crisis: while a single criminal act can trigger a destructive blaze, the scale of modern wildfire disasters is increasingly determined by broader environmental conditions, land management, and expanding development in fire-prone landscapes.
