SANTIAGO — Chile has released a set of scientific reports examining the links between climate change, public health and the country’s water and energy systems, providing recommendations intended to inform future climate policy updates, government officials and scientific advisers said.
The reports were prepared by Chile’s Scientific Advisory Committee on Climate Change (C4) and include assessments focused on climate change and health as well as the water-energy-food nexus. The documents compile national scientific evidence and are intended to support revisions to Chile’s long-term climate strategy and other climate planning instruments, authorities said.
Chile’s Ministry of the Environment said the reports were developed over the past year with contributions from researchers across the country and support from the United Nations Environment Programme and the NDC Partnership. The ministry said the work was part of efforts to strengthen the scientific basis of national climate decisions.
The climate and health report examines how changing environmental conditions can affect health risks, including impacts associated with rising temperatures and other climate-related pressures, according to information released by the institutions involved. Researchers from Chile’s Institute of Public Health contributed to the health-focused analysis.
A separate report on the water-energy-food nexus addresses the connections between water availability, energy production and food systems, an issue of particular relevance for Chile as regions face pressure from changing climate conditions and resource demands. The Scientific Advisory Committee said the reports are designed to provide evidence for policy discussions rather than prescribe specific government actions.
The release of the studies marked the beginning of a process to prepare an updated preliminary report for Chile’s Long-Term Climate Strategy, with authorities opening a public consultation to gather additional scientific evidence, the Environment Ministry said.
The C4 was established under Chile’s Climate Change Framework Law to connect scientific research with public policy development. The committee’s latest work involved more than 500 researchers from across the country, according to Chile’s Ministry of Science.
Officials said the next stage will involve reviewing additional evidence submitted through the consultation process before advancing the update of the country’s long-term climate planning framework.
