BEIJING — China issued flood and landslide alerts on Friday as Typhoon Dolphin approached, with heavy rains already affecting parts of the country and authorities warning of possible flooding, mudslides and geological hazards in vulnerable areas.
Beijing experienced heavy rainfall on Friday evening, prompting multiple districts to issue warnings for rain-related disasters, including urban flooding and landslides in mountainous and agricultural regions, according to local authorities. The warnings came as the country prepared for the effects of Typhoon Dolphin, which was expected to worsen weather conditions.
China’s weather and emergency management agencies have increased monitoring of rainfall, river conditions and geological risks as the typhoon moves toward areas that could be affected by strong winds and intense precipitation. Authorities have urged residents in high-risk locations to remain alert and follow evacuation or safety instructions when issued.
The Ministry of Water Resources has previously warned that typhoons can increase risks of flash floods, mountain torrents and flooding in rivers and urban areas, and has called for strengthened monitoring systems, reservoir inspections and emergency preparations during severe weather events.
Typhoon Dolphin is the latest in a series of storms to test China’s flood-control systems during the 2026 season. Earlier typhoons prompted emergency responses across several provinces, with authorities deploying rescue resources, strengthening flood defenses and preparing to relocate people from areas considered vulnerable to storms and landslides.
Officials have emphasized precautions in mountainous areas, where saturated ground conditions can increase the risk of landslides, and in cities where intense rainfall can overwhelm drainage systems. Emergency teams have been placed on standby in affected regions as forecasts continue to be updated.
As of Friday, authorities had not reported major casualties or widespread damage linked to Typhoon Dolphin, while monitoring continued for changes in the storm’s track and rainfall impact. Further alerts and emergency measures will be adjusted based on updated forecasts and local conditions.
