NEW YORK — Communities across North America and other parts of the world are organizing public watch parties for FIFA World Cup matches as the 2026 tournament enters its opening stages, with municipalities, cultural organizations and local businesses hosting gatherings aimed at bringing fans together during the competition.

Organizers in several host cities said the events are being held in parks, public squares, libraries and entertainment districts throughout June and July. Officials have described the watch parties as opportunities for residents and visitors to follow matches without attending stadium games, while also supporting local businesses and community activities.

In New York, city officials, FIFA representatives and the New York-New Jersey Host Committee announced a free public viewing event for the World Cup final in Central Park on July 19. Organizers said tickets would be distributed through a lottery system and described the gathering as one of the largest planned public viewing events associated with the tournament.

Similar initiatives are underway elsewhere. The Bay Area Host Committee said in April that free fan zones and watch parties would be available across multiple communities in Northern California during the tournament. In Washington state, the Seattle Public Library announced a series of free match screenings at several branches, while the city of Everett scheduled waterfront viewing events featuring large outdoor screens and family-oriented activities.

In Australia, Melbourne’s Federation Square has been designated as a watch zone for selected national team matches. Event organizers said security measures, including bag checks and controlled entry, would be in place for large crowds.

Attendance at some early events has been strong. In Albany, New York, hundreds of supporters gathered on Friday for a public screening of the United States men’s national team’s opening match, according to local organizers. Additional community screenings are scheduled in the coming weeks.

Officials and organizers have also highlighted logistical considerations, including crowd management, transportation and weather conditions. In some host regions, authorities have advised attendees to prepare for high temperatures and to follow safety guidance issued for outdoor events.

“Fans can come together and celebrate the world’s game in their own communities,” organizers of a watch-party program in the Washington, D.C., area said in event materials released this week.

As of Saturday, additional watch parties and fan festivals remained scheduled across host cities in the United States, Canada and Mexico, with organizers continuing to release event details and attendance information as the tournament progresses.
