JAKARTA — Organizations across the Coral Triangle region marked Coral Triangle Day on Tuesday with events focused on ocean conservation and protection of the world's marine biodiversity hotspot, officials from the Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs, Fisheries and Food Security (CTI-CFF) said.

The annual observance, established in 2012 and held every June 9, highlights the Coral Triangle, which spans the waters of Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Solomon Islands and Timor-Leste. Activities included beach clean-ups, educational exhibitions and community gatherings to raise awareness about threats facing the region.

The Coral Triangle, often called the "Amazon of the Seas," contains about 76% of the world's coral species despite covering less than 2% of the global ocean area, according to CTI-CFF data. It supports millions of people through fisheries and tourism while facing pressures from climate change, overfishing and pollution.

Events this year coincided with the 15th anniversary of the CTI-CFF regional partnership. In Bali, the Coral Triangle Center hosted gatherings for ocean advocates, families and youth, while webinars discussed knowledge sharing and capacity building for conservation. A new CTI-CFF Capacity Building Repository was launched to support regional efforts.

"Shared waters, shared solutions remain at the heart of our collective action," a CTI-CFF statement said, according to materials distributed for the observance.

Conservation initiatives in the region include marine protected areas, coral restoration projects and efforts to combat marine plastic pollution. Recent partnerships, such as one with The Ocean Cleanup, aim to address specific threats. Governments and organizations continue to implement strategies for sustainable fisheries and reef protection.

Stakeholders, including local communities, international partners and environmental groups, participate in the day’s activities. Some emphasize the economic importance of healthy reefs for coastal livelihoods, while others highlight the need for stronger enforcement of protection measures. Details on the scale of participation across all six countries remained unclear in initial reports.

As of Tuesday evening, events continued in various locations with calls for sustained action beyond the single day of observance. The CTI-CFF and partner organizations plan to build on the momentum with ongoing programs throughout the year. No major new policy announcements were reported during the day’s activities.

The Coral Triangle Day serves as a regional complement to World Oceans Day, observed the previous day, to focus global attention on this critical ecosystem.
