ÉVIAN-LES-BAINS, France — Group of Seven leaders are expected to issue a statement reaffirming support for Ukraine and its reconstruction efforts as they wrap up their summit on Wednesday.
The annual summit, hosted by France in this eastern town from June 15 to 17, has included discussions on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy attending sessions.
French officials and other participants indicated that a statement addressing continued backing for Ukraine, including reconstruction, would be part of the summit's outcomes. Details of the exact wording remained unclear as talks continued into the final day.
G7 leaders have repeatedly expressed support for Ukraine since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022. In previous statements, they have committed to financial, humanitarian and other assistance for as long as needed, while also addressing recovery needs.
The summit takes place amid efforts by European leaders to maintain momentum on aid to Ukraine and explore paths toward peace, even as attention has also focused on other global issues, including tensions in the Middle East.
Ukrainian officials have emphasized the importance of sustained international support for both defense and long-term rebuilding of infrastructure damaged during the conflict. The next Ukraine Recovery Conference is scheduled for June 25-26 in Gdańsk, Poland.
"We reaffirm our unwavering support for Ukraine," G7 leaders said in a February statement marking the anniversary of the escalation of the conflict.
Reconstruction discussions have focused on areas such as energy infrastructure resilience, with G7 countries providing equipment and funding for repairs ahead of future winters. Private sector involvement and coordination through platforms like the Ukraine Donor Platform have also been highlighted in prior G7 meetings.
The United States, under President Donald Trump, has been part of the talks, with European allies seeking to align on approaches to the conflict. Zelenskyy held meetings with leaders including Trump during the summit.
As of Wednesday morning, the full text of any final statement had not been released publicly. French President Emmanuel Macron's office has indicated that geopolitical issues, including Ukraine, would feature in presidency statements or declarations.
The G7 comprises Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States. The European Union also participates in the meetings. No further details on specific new commitments were immediately available.
