MOSCOW — Ukrainian drones targeted Moscow and the surrounding region in a large overnight attack, damaging an apartment building and sparking fires at industrial and logistics sites, Russian officials said on Tuesday.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said more than 390 drones were detected heading toward the wider Moscow region between late Monday and early Tuesday, with 81 intercepted near the capital. He did not report casualties or damage in Moscow itself.
Moscow Region Governor Andrei Vorobyov said a drone struck an apartment building in the town of Chekhov, about 50 km (31 miles) south of Moscow. Chekhov Mayor Mikhail Sobakin said no one was injured, although the building's facade and two apartments were damaged.
Vorobyov also reported that drone debris caused a fire at an open tire-storage site in Chekhov. Independent reports identified the location as the Chekhov Regeneration Plant, which processes used automobile tires and produces rubber products.
A separate fire broke out at a warehouse operated by logistics company 3PL in Koledino, near Podolsk, according to independent Russian Telegram channel Astra, which cited footage and reports from local residents. A nearby distribution center operated by Russian e-commerce company Wildberries continued operating, the company said.
Russian authorities also reported drone interceptions over several other parts of the Moscow region, including Podolsk, Domodedovo and Kolomna. Temporary restrictions were imposed on flights at several Moscow-area airports during the attack.
Ukraine did not immediately claim responsibility for the strikes. Kyiv has increasingly used long-range drones against targets deep inside Russia during the war, saying such operations are aimed at disrupting military and logistical infrastructure. Moscow has condemned Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory and regularly reports that its air defenses intercept large numbers of drones.
The reported damage and casualties could not be independently verified, and Russian officials did not provide evidence establishing the intended targets of the individual drones.
Russian authorities said emergency services were responding at the sites of the reported fires and damage.
