KYIV — Russian drones killed a three-year-old boy and his grandparents in a village near Kyiv, while a separate ballistic missile attack killed another person in the capital, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Saturday.
The overnight Russian attack involved six ballistic missiles and 151 drones, according to Ukraine's air force. Ukrainian air defences intercepted 135 drones but did not intercept the ballistic missiles, it said.
The three victims near Kyiv were killed when a private house in Puhivka, about 30 km (19 miles) from the capital, caught fire after the drone strike, Zelenskiy said. The boy's parents, 15-year-old brother and a neighbour were wounded, he added.
Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv regional administration, said strikes were recorded at three locations in the Brovary district, damaging 10 private homes as well as commercial and production facilities. Fires were also reported in three districts of Kyiv, where commercial premises and warehouses were damaged, officials said.
Reuters witnesses heard several powerful explosions in central Kyiv. Russia and Ukraine both deny deliberately targeting civilians.
The Ukrainian attacks overnight also targeted Russia's Ilsky and Syzran oil refineries, causing fires, according to Ukraine's General Staff. Russian authorities said five people were wounded in a Ukrainian drone attack in the southern Krasnodar region.
The casualty figures and damage reports remain subject to further updates as authorities assess the aftermath.
