WASHINGTON — Stellantis has issued a major recall covering more than 1 million Jeep vehicles in the United States after identifying a wiring defect that could increase the risk of fire, even when the vehicles are parked and turned off, according to the company and U.S. safety regulators. The recall, announced on Tuesday, affects certain 2021-2025 Jeep Wrangler SUVs and Jeep Gladiator pickup trucks.

The automaker said the issue involves an electrical connection in the electric hydraulic power steering pump wiring. Under certain conditions, the connection can overheat, potentially igniting nearby combustible materials and leading to a vehicle fire. Stellantis said it is working on a remedy and expects a repair to become available by July.

According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall affects approximately 1.08 million vehicles in the United States. Additional vehicles in Canada, Mexico and other international markets are also included in the broader global recall, bringing the total number of affected vehicles to more than 1.3 million worldwide.

As an interim safety measure, Stellantis and NHTSA advised owners to park affected vehicles outdoors and away from buildings and other vehicles until repairs can be completed. NHTSA said the defect could result in a fire even when the ignition is switched off.

“Out of an abundance of caution,” Stellantis said it is advising owners “to park away from structures or other vehicles until the remedy is obtained.”

The recall follows a federal investigation that began after reports of vehicle fires. NHTSA said it opened an inquiry in 2024 after receiving multiple reports involving affected vehicles. Regulators said they were aware of dozens of fire incidents potentially linked to the defect and at least one reported injury. Stellantis said it had identified numerous field reports associated with the issue, though details of individual incidents remain limited.

Dealers will inspect affected components and repair or replace parts as necessary at no cost to vehicle owners, according to recall documents. Stellantis said owners will receive notification letters once the repair program is ready. NHTSA said affected vehicle identification numbers are expected to become searchable through its recall database beginning this week.

The recall remains active, and both Stellantis and federal regulators continue to advise owners to follow the parking guidance until a permanent remedy becomes available.
