MUMBAI — Rescue teams searched through debris on Thursday after a landslip struck a densely populated area of Mumbai’s eastern suburb of Ghatkopar, killing at least seven people and injuring others following heavy monsoon rain, officials said.
The landslip occurred early Wednesday in Ashok Nagar, where a section of hillside collapsed onto two or three homes, according to local officials and media reports. Emergency personnel from the National Disaster Response Force, Mumbai Fire Brigade and police were deployed to search the debris for people who might still be trapped.
The rescue operation was complicated by narrow lanes in the densely built-up settlement, the Associated Press reported, citing officials. Heavy rain in Mumbai and surrounding parts of Maharashtra has complicated emergency operations and raised the risk of further landslides.
At least seven people died in the incident, including two children and two teenagers, while several others were injured, according to the Associated Press. One person was still reported missing as rescue workers continued searching the site.
The incident came as Mumbai experienced intense monsoon rainfall. The city and surrounding areas are prone to flooding and landslides during the June-to-September rainy season, particularly in settlements located near hillsides.
Local authorities have been carrying out rescue and relief operations while assessing damage and the safety of nearby residents. Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde visited the affected area and said compensation would be provided to families affected by the disaster, according to the Associated Press.
Mumbai, one of India’s most densely populated cities, has repeatedly faced landslides and building collapses during periods of heavy rainfall. Emergency authorities have previously warned that densely settled areas on or near unstable slopes can be particularly vulnerable during the monsoon.
Rescue teams remained at the site on Thursday, clearing debris and checking the collapsed structures for anyone who might remain trapped, with authorities continuing to assess the situation.
