GENEVA — Switzerland has implemented temporary border controls along its frontier with France as part of a broader security operation linked to the Group of Seven summit taking place this week in nearby Évian-les-Bains, French and Swiss authorities said.

The Swiss Federal Council approved the temporary measures in May, authorizing checks at internal Schengen borders from June 10 through June 19. Officials said the controls were introduced to support security efforts surrounding the G7 summit, which runs from June 15 to June 17 in the French resort town on Lake Geneva, close to Swiss territory. According to the Swiss government, the cities of Geneva and Lausanne and the wider Lake Geneva region face heightened security risks during the gathering.

Swiss authorities said previous G7 and G8 summits had been accompanied by protests, disruptions, vandalism and property damage, prompting additional precautions. In a statement announcing the decision, the Federal Council said the temporary controls were intended to strengthen support for cantons directly affected by summit-related activities.

The measures include identity checks at border crossings and partial closures of some crossing points in the Canton of Geneva. Switzerland’s Federal Office for Customs and Border Security said travelers could experience delays and advised visitors to carry valid identification documents. Authorities stated that entry requirements for Switzerland remain unchanged despite the enhanced controls.

Security preparations extend beyond border management. Switzerland has coordinated closely with France on military and law-enforcement operations linked to the summit. The Swiss government approved a joint military cooperation framework covering Lake Geneva and surrounding airspace, while thousands of Swiss troops have been assigned to support civilian authorities during the event. Officials cited “heightened global tensions” and the presence of world leaders as reasons for the extensive security arrangements.

Geneva has also increased security measures in anticipation of demonstrations linked to the summit. Reuters reported last week that authorities were preparing for a large protest expected to attract tens of thousands of participants. Local officials ordered the closure or restriction of numerous border crossings and coordinated closely with French counterparts as leaders arrived in the region.

“Although the summit is taking place in France, the cities of Geneva and Lausanne, as well as the entire Lake Geneva region, are exposed to certain security risks,” the Swiss government said in explaining the temporary controls.

The G7 summit is being hosted by France in Évian-les-Bains, just across the border from Switzerland. Swiss officials said the temporary controls will remain in effect until June 19, after which normal border procedures are expected to resume unless further measures are announced.
