BURGENSTOCK, SWITZERLAND — The United States and Iran have agreed on a roadmap aimed at reaching a final agreement within 60 days following high-level talks in Switzerland, mediators Qatar and Pakistan said on Monday. The agreement establishes a framework for further negotiations, but officials said details of the final arrangement remain under discussion.
The talks were held at the Bürgenstock resort in Switzerland and involved U.S. and Iranian officials, with Qatar and Pakistan serving as mediators, according to a joint statement released by the two countries. The statement said a high-level committee had agreed on a roadmap toward a final deal and that technical discussions would continue.
U.S. officials said the discussions covered issues including regional security, sanctions, nuclear matters and mechanisms to reduce the risk of further escalation. Iranian officials have also emphasized issues related to sanctions relief and economic measures, though the scope of possible commitments from both sides remains subject to negotiation.
The talks follow a period of heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran and come after efforts to maintain a ceasefire framework. Mediators said the two sides also agreed to establish communication channels intended to help avoid incidents involving commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, a key international maritime route.
A joint statement from the mediators said, “The High Level Committee has agreed upon a roadmap towards reaching a final deal within 60 days, laying the foundation for the immediate commencement of further technical talks.”
The United States has focused on issues involving Iran’s nuclear activities and regional security concerns, while Tehran has sought relief from economic restrictions, Iranian officials said. Officials from both sides have indicated that additional negotiations will be required before any comprehensive agreement can be completed.
The process includes working groups and further technical-level discussions, according to mediators. Details about enforcement mechanisms, monitoring arrangements and the final terms of a possible agreement remain unclear.
On Tuesday, officials said talks were continuing after the initial agreement on the roadmap. The United States and Iran have not announced a final peace agreement, and negotiators are expected to continue discussions during the 60-day period outlined by mediators.
