KYIV, Ukraine — A major Russian missile and drone attack sparked a fire that badly damaged the Dormition Cathedral at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra monastery complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ukrainian officials said.

The overnight strike on June 14-15 hit the historic 11th-century complex in the Ukrainian capital as part of one of the heaviest air assaults on Kyiv in recent weeks, authorities reported. Flames engulfed the roof of the main cathedral, with firefighters battling the blaze amid continued attacks.

The Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, also known as the Monastery of the Caves and founded in 1051, is one of Ukraine’s most significant religious and cultural landmarks. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990 as part of the property “Kyiv: Saint-Sophia Cathedral and Related Monastic Buildings, Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.”

Ukrainian Culture Ministry officials and the director general of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra National Preserve said a strike, described by some as involving a kamikaze drone, caused the fire that engulfed roughly 800 square meters of the cathedral’s roof. Significant damage was reported to the exterior and interior of the Dormition Cathedral, with adjacent historic structures including elements of the fortification complex and Ivan Kushnik Tower also affected.

“The roof of one of the holiest places in the Christian world — the Dormition Cathedral of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra — is burning,” Metropolitan Epiphanius, head of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, said in a statement.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the incident as one of Russia’s most serious crimes against Christian culture. Ukrainian officials said the attack formed part of a broader barrage across the country that also caused civilian casualties and damage elsewhere.

The monastery complex features golden domes and underground caves and has stood as a spiritual center for nearly a millennium. Much of the cathedral’s structure remained standing after the fire, with parts of the interior reported intact, according to initial assessments.

UNESCO condemned the reported strike, noting its impact on the World Heritage property. Details on the full extent of the damage were still being assessed.

The Russian government has not commented specifically on the incident at the Lavra. Moscow has previously stated that its military operations target military infrastructure and has denied deliberately attacking civilian or cultural sites.

As of June 17, emergency services continued recovery efforts at the site, and Ukrainian prosecutors were investigating the incident. No independent verification of all details was immediately available.
