Mar 26, 2026 - The U.S. military has ordered elements of the 82nd Airborne Division to deploy to the Middle East as the conflict with Iran escalates, according to Pentagon officials and multiple news reports.
Approximately 1,000 to 3,000 paratroopers, including Maj. Gen. Brandon Tegtmeier, commander of the 82nd Airborne Division, and staff from the division headquarters along with a battalion from the 1st Brigade Combat Team, received deployment orders this week. The troops, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, form part of the division’s Immediate Response Force, which can mobilize within 18 hours for rapid operations.
The deployment adds to the roughly 50,000 U.S. troops already in the region and comes alongside the movement of Marine Expeditionary Units toward the Persian Gulf. U.S. officials have not detailed the exact mission, but the forces are positioned to support operations aimed at countering Iranian threats, including disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.
The move follows weeks of intensified fighting that began in late February. U.S. and Israeli strikes have targeted Iranian military sites, while Iran has responded with missile and drone attacks across the region and restricted maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil shipments. Shipping volumes in the strait have declined significantly since early March.
On Wednesday, Iran rejected a U.S. ceasefire proposal delivered through intermediaries and launched renewed missile strikes, including one that struck a fuel tank at Kuwait International Airport. Earlier this week, Israeli forces reported killing Alireza Tangsiri, commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy, in a strike on Bandar Abbas. Tangsiri had overseen Iranian naval activities in the strait.
The 82nd Airborne Division has a history of rapid deployments to the Middle East, including during the 1990-1991 Persian Gulf War, where it served as an early ground force. The unit specializes in airborne assaults and securing key objectives.
Energy markets have reacted to the ongoing disruptions, with oil prices fluctuating amid concerns over supply routes from Gulf producers. Several international shipping companies have rerouted vessels to avoid the area, increasing costs and transit times.
As of Thursday, the deployment of the 82nd Airborne elements was underway, with troops preparing to move to unspecified locations in the Middle East. U.S. Central Command continued operations in the region, and diplomatic efforts through third parties remained active without an announced resolution to the conflict.
