INDIANAPOLIS — Patients using the obesity drug Wegovy are reporting challenges in maintaining weight loss over the long term, particularly after discontinuing treatment, as new studies and clinical discussions highlight the difficulty of sustaining results achieved with GLP-1 medications.

Wegovy, developed by Novo Nordisk and known generically as semaglutide, has become one of the most widely prescribed obesity treatments in recent years. Clinical trials and real-world studies have shown that the medication can produce significant weight loss while patients remain on therapy. However, researchers and physicians say maintaining those outcomes after treatment ends remains a major concern.

Recent reviews published in medical journals found that many patients regain a substantial portion of lost weight after stopping GLP-1 medications. A systematic review published in eClinicalMedicine this year reported that most patients experienced significant weight regain following discontinuation of therapy, with studies indicating that much of the weight lost during treatment could return within a year.

Another review, reported earlier this year, found that people who stopped GLP-1 drugs such as Wegovy often regained weight within approximately 18 months. Researchers said the pattern reflected biological mechanisms linked to appetite regulation and energy balance after treatment is withdrawn.

Physicians involved in obesity treatment have emphasized that Wegovy was designed to treat a chronic condition rather than serve as a short-term intervention. Clinical experts cited in recent studies said long-term success frequently depends on continued treatment, lifestyle changes, or alternative therapies after discontinuation.

At the same time, researchers stressed that outcomes vary among patients. A Cleveland Clinic study published in March found that some former users were able to stabilize their weight after discontinuing GLP-1 therapy by restarting medication, switching to other treatments, or adopting therapeutic lifestyle interventions. Investigators said the findings provided real-world context to clinical trials that had documented more pronounced weight regain.

The discussion comes as manufacturers continue to expand treatment options. New research presented at the European Congress on Obesity in May examined oral versions of semaglutide and other obesity medications aimed at improving convenience and supporting long-term weight management. Separate studies reported that some patients who transitioned from injectable therapies to oral treatments maintained much of their previous weight loss.

Novo Nordisk and other pharmaceutical companies have continued to emphasize that obesity is a chronic disease requiring ongoing management. Clinical trial data presented this year showed that semaglutide remains effective in producing significant weight loss while treatment continues, according to company-sponsored research.

As of June, researchers said additional long-term studies are underway to better understand weight maintenance after GLP-1 treatment. Health experts continue to recommend that patients consult healthcare providers before starting, stopping or changing obesity medications.
