GUWAHATI — The death toll from severe flooding in India’s northeastern Assam state has reached 100, with nearly 138,000 people affected across seven districts, according to an official bulletin cited by local media on Monday.
The floods, which followed heavy monsoon rains, have inundated large areas of the state and prompted continuing rescue, relief and rehabilitation operations. Several rivers were flowing above danger levels, raising concerns about flooding in additional areas, the bulletin said.
The Disaster Reporting and Information Management System recorded 100 flood-related deaths, including 60 men, 23 women and 18 children, according to the latest figures reported by The Indian Express. Authorities revised the toll in Sivasagar district from 50 to 49 after determining that one death had been recorded twice.
Sivasagar remains among the worst-hit districts, with 49 deaths reported, while Cachar has recorded 22 fatalities, Karimganj nine and Golaghat eight, according to the same report. Deaths have also been recorded in Dhemaji, Nagaon, Udalguri, Sonitpur and Karbi Anglong.
The latest official figures showed more than 137,500 people affected across Charaideo, Darrang, Golaghat, Jorhat, Karbi Anglong, Nagaon and Sivasagar. Jorhat alone had about 166,000 people affected across 304 villages in figures reported separately by The Indian Express, reflecting differences in reporting periods and assessment methods.
State and central authorities are continuing relief operations, including assistance to people in inundated areas and efforts to restore essential services. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has been reviewing the situation, while officials continue to monitor river levels and damage.
Neighboring Chhattisgarh has also pledged 500 million rupees ($5.6 million) for relief and rehabilitation in flood-hit Assam. Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai spoke with Sarma and announced the assistance, officials said.
Authorities said monitoring and relief operations were continuing across the affected districts as floodwaters remained a threat in some areas.
