LEIPZIG, Germany — German authorities are investigating after an explosive-carrying drone was found near a Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft at Leipzig/Halle Airport, while a separate cargo plane sustained minor damage after colliding with an unidentified airborne object, prompting heightened security at one of Europe's busiest freight hubs.
Police discovered the modified drone late on the night of Aug. 4-5 within the airport's secured area near the southern runway. Bomb disposal specialists examined the device and rendered it safe after determining it contained an improvised explosive device with a defective detonator, according to German authorities. Temporary runway closures and flight disruptions were imposed while investigators secured the site and assessed any broader threat.
Separately, a freight aircraft departing the airport struck an unidentified object during flight and later landed safely in Hannover with minor damage. Authorities are investigating whether that object was another drone, though officials have not confirmed any connection between the two incidents.
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt described the discovery of an explosive-equipped drone at an airport as representing a "new quality" of threat, reflecting growing concern over unauthorized drone activity around critical infrastructure. He said investigators were working to establish how the device entered the airport's restricted zone and who was responsible.
The investigation is being led by prosecutors and specialist police units responsible for counterterrorism and sabotage cases. Officials have not identified any suspects or attributed responsibility to any individual, group or state, stressing that inquiries remain at an early stage. Although media reports have cited suspicions of possible Russian involvement, German authorities have not publicly assigned blame and said all investigative avenues remain open.
