NEW DELHI — India has voiced deep concern over civilian casualties in the Gulf region amid ongoing conflict-related incidents, including attacks on merchant shipping that have claimed the lives of Indian nationals.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated on Wednesday that it firmly opposes attacks on commercial vessels and civilian mariners, following recent incidents in the Gulf of Oman and surrounding areas. Multiple Indian crew members have been killed or reported missing in such events since the escalation of tensions earlier this year.
India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Parvathaneni Harish, reiterated the government’s position during a UN Security Council open debate, urging all parties to exercise restraint, avoid escalation and prioritize civilian safety. He highlighted that many Indian nationals have lost their lives or remain missing as a result of attacks against countries in the region and merchant vessels.
The MEA has confirmed several Indian deaths linked to the incidents, including crew members on commercial ships. In one recent case, three Indian sailors were among those affected in an attack on a vessel off the coast of Oman. Overall figures reported by the ministry indicate multiple fatalities and at least one missing person across various Gulf-related events.
India maintains a large diaspora in Gulf countries, with millions of citizens working in the region. The government has established control rooms, issued travel advisories and coordinated with missions in affected countries for assistance, repatriation of remains and support for families. Over hundreds of thousands of passengers have returned from the Gulf since late February.
"India has always emphasized the protection of civilians as the foremost priority," the MEA has stated in communications regarding the situation.
The concerns come against the backdrop of broader regional conflict involving Iran and other parties, which has led to strikes impacting civilian infrastructure and maritime activities. India has called for dialogue and diplomacy to resolve underlying issues while condemning attacks on merchant shipping and civilian targets.
As of Thursday, Indian missions continue to monitor the situation closely and engage with host governments. The MEA said it remains in contact with affected families and local authorities for updates on missing persons and further assistance. Additional advisories may be issued depending on developments in the region.
