TIJUANA, Mexico — Iran's national soccer team arrived in Tijuana early Sunday for training ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, after relocating its base camp from the United States due to visa and logistical concerns.
The squad landed around 5 a.m. local time following a flight from a training camp in Antalya, Turkey, where it had prepared for about three weeks, officials said. Players, led by captain Ehsan Hajsafi, passed through security checks before heading to their accommodations near Estadio Caliente.
The move to Tijuana, approved by FIFA in late May, came after Iran shifted from a planned base in Tucson, Arizona. The relocation addresses complications including visa issues for some support staff and restrictions on overnight stays in the U.S., according to Iranian officials and reports.
Iran is scheduled to play all three Group G matches in the United States: against New Zealand on June 15 in Los Angeles, Belgium on June 21 in Los Angeles, and Egypt on June 26 in Seattle. The team will commute from Mexico for those games.
The Iranian Football Federation described the Tijuana base as resolving entry challenges, with the team crossing into the U.S. only on match days. Mexican authorities facilitated the arrangements after FIFA's request.
"The team is focused on preparation and unity," a federation spokesperson said, according to local reports. Players were seen carrying team gear and maintaining a low profile amid heightened security at the airport.
Tijuana's facilities, including those associated with local club Xolos, will host training sessions. The squad had played friendlies against Gambia and Mali in Turkey as part of its buildup.
The World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, runs from June 11 to July 19. Iran's participation comes amid ongoing diplomatic sensitivities between Iran and the U.S.
FIFA has confirmed the base camp change and assured the team's full involvement in the tournament. Details on the length of stay in Mexico and exact training schedule remain subject to final arrangements.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum previously welcomed the hosting role, stating the country had no objections to accommodating the team. Iranian officials expressed appreciation for the support while continuing preparations for the group stage.
The squad is expected to settle in over the coming days before intensifying on-field sessions.
