CHONGQING, China — A landslide in southwest China’s Chongqing municipality killed at least eight people and left 34 others missing after it buried residential buildings, local authorities said, as rescue teams continued searching the debris on Saturday.
The landslide struck Pengshui County at about 9:08 a.m. on Friday, collapsing part of a hillside and burying homes in the area, according to state media reports. More than 1,100 residents were evacuated, and emergency crews were deployed to search for those trapped.
Local government officials said eight people had died and 34 remained missing. Rescue workers recovered people from the debris, with authorities continuing operations to locate additional victims and assess the extent of the damage.
Chinese President Xi Jinping directed authorities to carry out rescue efforts and investigate the cause of the disaster, state media reported. Officials have not announced a final determination of what triggered the collapse.
The affected area in Pengshui County, located in southeastern Chongqing near the Wujiang River, is a mountainous region where geological hazards can occur. Emergency teams were working at the site while authorities monitored conditions and provided support to evacuated residents.
Search and rescue operations remained ongoing, and officials said further updates would be provided as information was verified.
