ROTTERDAM — Dutch police arrested a 26-year-old man after two men were injured in a series of stabbing attacks in Rotterdam, authorities said, with a further stabbing attempt reported about 30 minutes later.
The first two incidents occurred on Saturday morning on Schaepmanstraat and at Marconiplein, west of Rotterdam’s city centre, police said. The victims were described by police as men who appeared to have been targeted at random. One was taken to hospital, while the other received treatment from paramedics at the scene.
Police said a third incident was reported at the Brug Van Cyrene bridge in the northwest of the city shortly afterward. The force said it believed a single suspect was involved in the incidents and that he was believed to have been travelling by car.
The suspect was arrested after the attacks, according to Dutch police and reports citing the force. Authorities have not publicly established a motive for the attacks, and the circumstances surrounding the incidents remained under investigation.
The two injured men were the only casualties reported by police in the initial accounts. No deaths were reported.
Police have described the attacks as involving apparently random victims, but the investigation will determine whether the incidents were connected and establish the circumstances leading up to the attacks.
Dutch authorities have not indicated that the incidents were being treated as terrorism. Police have also not publicly identified the suspect or provided details about possible charges.
The arrest followed a rapid police response after the separate stabbing incidents, with investigators examining the locations and circumstances of the attacks. Police had said the suspected involvement of one person was based on their initial assessment.
The investigation remained ongoing as of Sunday, with authorities expected to establish the suspect’s possible motive and the precise sequence of events.
