WASHINGTON—The National Park Service and U.S. Park Police have installed fencing around the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool on the National Mall ahead of July 4 celebrations, as authorities maintain heightened security measures at the site following reported vandalism and ongoing repair work, officials said and agency notices show.
The Reflecting Pool, located between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, has been closed to visitors since late June under a temporary National Park Service closure order that runs through at least early July, according to an agency public notice. The order states that fencing or other physical barriers would delineate the restricted area as part of efforts to protect resources and ensure public safety during ongoing work and holiday preparations.
The installation of chain-link fencing began earlier this week and is part of broader security and maintenance operations at the site, which has been undergoing repair and rehabilitation work in recent months, according to Park Service documents and officials cited in court filings. The closure includes the Reflecting Pool and adjacent walkways on the National Mall.
Officials have linked the increased security posture to preparations for July 4 events on the National Mall, which typically draw large crowds and involve temporary infrastructure, restricted zones and coordinated federal security measures. In addition, Park Service officials have cited reported incidents of damage to the pool’s lining earlier this month as part of the reason for continued monitoring and restricted access.
A Park Service official said in a sworn statement that U.S. Park Police examined what appeared to be intentional damage to the pool’s liner after a June 9 incident report, though authorities have not publicly released additional forensic details about the cause or responsibility, according to court filings referenced in agency reporting.
Officials have also said earlier repair and restoration work had already required partial closures of the site, with the current fencing and access restrictions extending those measures through the holiday period. The National Park Service has not announced any cancellation of Independence Day activities in the surrounding National Mall area.
As of Saturday, the Reflecting Pool remains fully fenced and closed to visitors under the temporary order, with restrictions scheduled to remain in place through at least July 10, according to the Park Service notice.
