LEWES, Delaware—U.S. Senator Chris Coons of Delaware was treated for minor injuries and released from a hospital after a multi-vehicle crash in Lewes on Sunday that authorities said was triggered by a driver experiencing a medical emergency.
Coons, a Democrat, said he was a passenger in one of several vehicles struck after another driver lost consciousness because of a suspected medical incident. His office said the senator was taken to Beebe Hospital, where he received treatment for minor injuries before being discharged and returning home. The office said he is expected to make a full and swift recovery.
Lewes Police Chief Thomas Spell said the collision occurred at about 10:20 a.m. local time on Savannah Road. According to police, a pickup truck whose driver suffered a suspected medical emergency struck multiple vehicles, including the one carrying Coons. Authorities said there were no indications the truck driver was impaired.
Coons thanked the Lewes Police Department, Lewes and Rehoboth fire departments, Sussex County Emergency Medical Services, and medical staff at Beebe Hospital for their response. He said he was relieved that, by all accounts, no one was seriously injured in the crash.
Local media reported that six people were transported to hospitals with minor injuries following the collision. Authorities have not reported any fatalities or life-threatening injuries.
Police have indicated the crash remains under investigation. No additional information about the driver who experienced the medical emergency or the circumstances leading to the collision had been released as of publication.
