KYIV — Russia and Ukraine exchanged overnight drone and missile strikes that killed civilians and injured dozens on both sides, according to regional authorities, as attacks continued to hit populated areas and infrastructure far from the front line.

In Russia's Belgorod region, Ukrainian drone strikes killed five people and wounded more than 20, including a child, regional authorities said. The attacks hit several locations in the border region, according to officials.

Russia's Defence Ministry said its forces had shot down 153 Ukrainian drones overnight. It said Russian strikes targeted Ukrainian military-related facilities, including drone warehouses in the Kharkiv region and fuel depots and other military stores at the port of Odesa. The claims could not be independently verified.

In Ukraine, Russian strikes killed two people and injured 21 in Kharkiv and Odesa, according to local authorities. In Kharkiv, missiles struck a high-rise apartment building in the Saltivskyi district, killing two people and injuring 13, regional governor Oleh Syniehubov said. Eight other people were wounded in Odesa after what local authorities described as dozens of missiles and drones struck the city and surrounding region.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Sunday that Russian attacks had also damaged Odesa's seaport, a major outlet for Ukraine's agricultural exports. Ukrainian officials said Russian strikes on energy facilities in the Odesa region had caused significant power outages, although electricity had been restored to about 90,000 consumers.

Russia said its strikes on Odesa and nearby Chornomorsk targeted fuel-storage facilities used by the Ukrainian military. Kyiv has increasingly used long-range drones against Russian energy and logistics infrastructure as it seeks to disrupt Moscow's ability to sustain the war.

The latest attacks followed a series of increasingly frequent long-range strikes by both sides. Earlier on Sunday, Ukrainian authorities reported three people killed and 37 wounded in Kharkiv after a multi-storey apartment building was hit, while Russian authorities reported five deaths and 25 injuries in Belgorod from a Ukrainian drone attack.

Officials on both sides continued to assess damage and casualties from the latest strikes, while independent verification of battlefield claims remained limited.
