KYIV — A Russian overnight missile and drone attack on the Kyiv region killed at least 17 people and injured 44 others, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Wednesday, in one of the deadliest strikes on the capital area in recent weeks.
Zelenskyy said the barrage struck civilian infrastructure, including warehouses, a postal sorting facility, a railway station and other logistics sites. Ukrainian emergency services continued search-and-rescue operations at multiple locations, warning that the casualty toll could change as crews cleared debris.
Ukraine's Air Force said Russia launched 24 ballistic missiles, four hypersonic or supersonic missiles and 115 drones during the attack. It said air defences intercepted most of the drones but none of the ballistic missiles, underscoring Kyiv's shortage of systems capable of countering such weapons.
Zelenskyy urged Ukraine's allies to accelerate deliveries of additional air-defence systems and interceptor missiles, saying more capabilities could have reduced the loss of life.
Russia's Defence Ministry said its forces had targeted military logistics facilities linked to Ukraine's armed forces. Ukrainian officials rejected that account, saying the strikes hit civilian infrastructure. Reuters could not independently verify the competing claims.
The attack came as both sides continue long-range strikes far from the front lines. Ukrainian authorities said rescue operations remained underway and that officials were still assessing the full extent of the damage.
